Sony Block Solutions Labs Announces Development of New Blockchain Layer “Soneium”

Sony Block Solutions Labs, a joint venture of Sony Group and Singaporean company Startale Labs, has announced the development of a new blockchain layer called “Soneium.” This project aims to attract application developers from various sectors such as entertainment, gaming, finance, and many others.

Soneium Testnet in Collaboration with Astar Network

The Soneium testnet, soon to be launched, will be implemented in collaboration with Astar Network. Sony Group is experimenting with Web3 technologies, and venturing into the blockchain space could further boost the adoption of this modern technology. Jun Watanabe, the chairman of Sony Block Solutions Labs, expressed hopes of fostering diverse businesses and new use cases to reach as many users as possible.

Technological Partners of the Soneium Testnet

Companies involved in Web3 technology, such as Optimism, Circle, Alchemy, The Graph, and Chainlink, have joined as technological partners for the Soneium testnet. This testnet will provide tools to assist developers in navigating global regulations to create compliant applications.

Exploration of Web3 Applications and Initiatives

Sony plans to explore applications for existing Web3 services compatible with Soneium, as well as contemplate new services related to businesses within the Sony Group. As part of Web3 technology initiatives, Sony Group’s gaming division aims to patent the adoption of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) under the “Framework for NFT interoperability and use of digital assets across gaming platforms” initiative.

Japan’s Support for the Web3 Community

Japan, the home country of Sony, also supports the Web3 community. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry aims to increase strategic domestic investments in Web3 startups, enabling partner companies to acquire and hold cryptographic assets.

The “Soneium” project marks another stride by Sony in exploring and implementing innovative technologies, opening new possibilities related to blockchain and Web3 for developers and businesses.
