New method of online blackmail – cybercriminals terrorize victims with phishing scams!
A New Form of Online Extortion – Beware of Phishing!
Lately, a new, alarming form of online extortion has emerged, making more and more people feel threatened.
Email from the Extortionist
Users of Microsoft accounts have recently been targeted by cybercriminals who impersonate the user’s email address and send fake messages claiming to have hacked their devices and gained unauthorized access to their online accounts.
The Extortionist’s Demands
The extortionist claims to have obtained the user’s password and installed a trojan on their devices, gaining access to the microphone, camera, keyboard, and personal data. In exchange for removing the compromising information, a payment of $500 in bitcoins to a specified wallet is demanded. The extortionist threatens to disclose recorded intimate moments if the user does not agree to make the payment within 48 hours.
Recommendations for Users
It is advised to remain calm and avoid interacting with the sender. Actions directly related to the extortionist’s email should not be taken. Regularly changing passwords is also suggested as a method to prevent similar situations in the future.
It is important to remember that negotiating with cybercriminals can only cause harm, so it is best to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities. Never succumb to pressure and make payments in situations of online extortion.
